The Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls: A Month-by-Month Guide

Victoria Falls is spectacular year-round, but each season offers a different experience. Here's our complete guide to help you choose the perfect time for your visit.

Victoria Falls — known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, "The Smoke That Thunders" — is one of the few destinations on earth that rewards you no matter when you arrive. But the Falls you'll see in April are a completely different spectacle from the Falls in October, and the right month depends entirely on what you want from your trip. This month-by-month guide breaks it down so you can plan with confidence.

Understanding the Zambezi's rhythm

Everything at Victoria Falls follows the Zambezi River, and the Zambezi follows the rains. The river peaks months after the wet season because water drains slowly from the vast catchment upstream in Angola and Zambia. That lag is why the Falls are at their fullest in the dry months of April and May, long after the rain has stopped.

Two forces pull in opposite directions: water volume (highest Feb–May) and visibility (best Aug–Dec, when spray is lighter). Your ideal window sits somewhere on that spectrum.

High-water season: February to May

This is the Falls at their most overwhelming. More than 500 million litres of water per minute can pour over the 1,700-metre-wide basalt lip, sending spray hundreds of metres into the sky — visible from 50 kilometres away. It's raw, thunderous and genuinely humbling.

The trade-off is visibility. At peak flow the spray is so dense that the main gorge can disappear behind a permanent curtain of mist. Bring a rain jacket, expect to get soaked, and treat your camera accordingly. A guided tour of the rainforest and bridge with someone who knows exactly where the viewpoints clear is worth its weight in gold this time of year.

Note that white-water rafting usually closes during peak flow because the rapids become unrunnable — if rafting is on your list, this is not your season.

Shoulder season: June to August

For many travellers this is the sweet spot. The Falls still carry impressive volume, the spray has thinned enough to reveal the full width of the gorge, and the surrounding bush has dried out — which means superb game viewing. Days are warm and sunny, nights are cool and crisp (pack a fleece for early morning game drives).

This is also peak safari season across the region, so it pairs beautifully with wildlife. Our 3-day Victoria Falls Dreams itinerary is built around exactly this balance of Falls and bush.

Low-water season: September to December

By October the Zambezi has dropped to its lowest, and on the Zambian side sections of the lip can run nearly dry. It sounds like a downside, but low water unlocks experiences impossible at any other time — most famously swimming in Devil's Pool, the natural rock infinity pool right on the edge of the drop.

This is also the best window for adrenaline activities: white-water rafting is at its most exhilarating, and the light, clear air is perfect for a helicopter Flight of Angels over the whole gorge system. October is hot — often called "suicide month" by locals — so plan activities for early morning and late afternoon.

Low water is prime game-viewing time too. Animals concentrate around shrinking water sources in Hwange and Chobe, making a combined trip like our 5-day Victoria Falls & Chobe especially rewarding.

Quick month-by-month summary

  • January–March: Green season, rising water, occasional afternoon storms, fewer crowds.
  • April–May: Maximum water and drama; heavy spray; rafting closed.
  • June–August: The all-rounder — strong Falls, clear views, excellent wildlife, cool nights.
  • September–October: Low water; Devil's Pool open; best rafting; hottest, dustiest bush and superb game concentrations.
  • November–December: First rains bring the bush back to life; dramatic skies; great value.

So when should you go?

If you want the Falls at their most powerful, come in April or May. If you want the best all-round mix of Falls, weather and wildlife, come in June to August. If you're chasing adventure — Devil's Pool, rafting, helicopter flights — come in September or October.
