Flight of Angels: Your Complete Guide to Helicopter Flights at Vic Falls

When David Livingstone first saw Victoria Falls, he wrote that the scene "must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight." Today you can take that flight yourself. A helicopter trip over the Falls — the famous Flight of Angels — is, for many visitors, the single most breathtaking thing they do in Africa. Here's everything you need to know to make the most of it.

Why do it from the air?

From the ground, Victoria Falls is overwhelming but hard to grasp in full — it's simply too big and, in high-water season, often shrouded in spray. From the air, the whole system suddenly makes sense: the 1,700-metre-wide sheet of water, the zig-zag chain of gorges the river has carved over millennia, and the Zambezi snaking off into the distance. 12-minute vs 25-minute flights

There are two standard options, and the choice matters:

• The 12–15 minute flight circles the Falls and the immediate gorge system, usually with two full loops so passengers on both sides get the prime view. It's the classic, and for most people it's plenty — the Falls are the star and you'll see them beautifully.
• The 25–30 minute flight adds a scenic loop over the upper Zambezi and often part of the Zambezi National Park, where you've a good chance of spotting elephant, hippo and buffalo from above. If you love aerial photography or want to extend the magic, the longer flight is well worth the upgrade.

Where you sit (and why it matters)

The helicopter loops in both directions specifically so that everyone gets an unobstructed view of the Falls at some point — so don't stress too much about seating. That said, window seats are obviously best, and the front seats beside the pilot offer a spectacular panoramic outlook. Best time of day and year

Light: Early morning and late afternoon give the softest, warmest light and the best chance of rainbows in the spray — magical for photos. Midday flights are still stunning but the light is harsher.

Season: In high-water season (roughly February to May) the sheer volume is jaw-dropping, though heavy spray can partly veil the gorge. In low-water season (September to December) the air is clear and you can see the full geological structure of the gorges — many photographers prefer it. There's genuinely no bad time.

Is it worth the money?

It's one of the pricier single activities at the Falls, and the honest answer is: for the overwhelming majority of our guests, yes, unreservedly. It's short, but it's the kind of experience people describe as a highlight of their entire trip. If budget is tight, choose the 12-minute flight over skipping it altogether.

Practical tips

• Flights are weather-dependent and can be delayed; build a little flexibility into your schedule.
• Cameras are welcome, but the doors stay on — shoot through clean glass and avoid resting your lens against the window to reduce vibration.
• There are modest weight and balance requirements; the operator will ask for passenger weights in advance to seat everyone safely.
• It's smooth and family-friendly — a wonderful shared moment for couples and families alike.
